Antipodean Opaleye

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The Antipodean Opaleye is a pure-bred dragon native to New Zealand whose unusual valley habitat and luminous appearance distinguish it from the mountain-dwelling image commonly associated with dragons. Its account combines precise natural-history details with a striking contrast: a dragon famed as perhaps the most beautiful of its kind, yet capable of producing vivid scarlet flame.

Classification and Range

The Antipodean Opaleye is listed among the pure-bred dragon varieties. New Zealand is its native land, but it has been known to migrate to Australia when territory becomes scarce there. This movement links its range to habitat availability: Australia is described as a destination under pressure in its native territory, not as its original home.

Habitat and Appearance

Unlike the usual mountain-dwelling dragon, the Antipodean Opaleye lives in valleys. It is medium-sized, weighing between two and three tonnes, and is described as perhaps the most beautiful type of dragon. Its pearly scales are iridescent, while its glittering eyes are multicoloured and pupil-less; those eyes give the species its name.

Fire and Character

The species produces a vivid scarlet flame, a memorable counterpoint to its pearly colouring. By dragon standards, however, it is not particularly aggressive. The description therefore resists treating its spectacular appearance or fiery capacity as a simple measure of its temperament: the Opaleye is a formidable dragon, but comparatively less aggressive than other dragons.
